Re: Discharge and Subhumans sold-out ?

If you are willing to encourage governemental sponsorship and don't care about giving your money to right-wing radios spreading racist propaganda and to banks, just to see 2 or 3 cool bands then don't call yourself an anarchist. According to your message the music seems to be more important than your political values so this is certainly not what anarcho-punk is all about.

This criticism has nothing to do with selfishness. If i was selfish then i'd just say "hey it's a great show so everything else doesnt matters lets just go see it because all that matters is my personal pleasure". THAT is selfishness.

Ok, then Discharge and Subhumans are sellouts, that sucks, but whatever. I was simply posing an alternative view, but apparently any alternative is simply wrong. So why did you put a question mark in the title of the thread if you already knew the answer?

Re: Discharge and Subhumans sold-out ?

I wouldn't go to a show like this to begin with ($30 is pushing it, even for bigger bands) because it's going to be a bro fest with plastic bottles/litter everywhere and porta potties are/get/will be gross. This isn't a justification for the sponsors/bands booked, but there are probably some people there with square system jobs who like/believe in some of these bands and had a hand in booking them so they aren't stuck at their shitty job with music they don't want to listen to the whole time. I do the same thing with a boombox 5 days a week.

Is Flag a new thing? Or have they been doing this for a while? Stuff like that gets on my nerves (stupid misfits or dk2.0, thumbs down lambpit), black flag was/is good, but it's been like 20+ years dudes, move on, do something new.

Yeah they started it in January, it's rather sad, because Greg Ginn has reformed Black Flag with Ron Reyes and himself. So now we have 2 Black Flags who both play concerts probably for more than 20$. I hate how one of my favorite bands has become a cash cow, just like everything else :'(. And I had hope Keith would of known better, he was doing so well in Off! Damn shame.

Because i am not sure if the bands were aware of the sponsorships and the other bands they play with. But you didn't put that into consideration, you just defended the festival and said critising it would be selfish.

Not sure. I think it is recent. There's another Black Flag reformation too. It's really ridiculous.

The Subhumans and Discharge have done more for punk than all of the members of our forum combined times 1,000. We have no right to criticize them. They can play where they want. If you don't like it, don't go.

Yuri your auguement is incompletely in accurate, we shouldn't worship them like gods and we have the right to criticize them, now they are selling out to a right wing and goverment and banks sponsored festival, is that fair when they were preaching about anarchy and anti capitalism?, go be a fan boy elsewhere if you can't take a little bit of critque, because then this forum isn't for you. :ecouteurs:.

Re: Discharge and Subhumans sold-out ?

I’m certainly not defending or advocating for Discharge or the Subhumans playing this festival (although to be honest, I’ve never listened to either of them that much).

But I am curious to hear people’s stances on such bands that tour on the road (therefore, typically requiring gasoline) or fly planes (who may be somewhat monopolistic airplane services who make billions a year). Obviously, this is deviating from the specific topic of Discharge and Subhumans at this festival, but I’m curious to hear what people think about this. Are these not also unethical things? Although, I understand that to a certain extent these things are inevitable, compared to choosing to play a specific festival. To me, this stuff is all just as important. What if members of a band, such as Discharge (or another favourite of mine, like Propagandhi) were found shopping at a Wal-Mart or eating at McDonalds? Obviously, that would be a compromise of their integrity (especially if that’s something the band previously stated that they oppose). I guess part of my point is that we often times don’t know what individuals in radical/anarchist bands do outside of the band, or the stuff that isn't seen publicly.

Anyways, just figured I’d share that thought.

What a ridiculous fanboyish argument. This scene would be nothing without the punks and the bands would be nothing without their public. We have all rights to critise the integrity of people claiming to be anarchists but acting otherwise. It's people like you who made the punk scene partly apathetic, mindless and careless. Anarchopunk and anarchism is all about accepting criticism and questionning yourself.

I can't believe you registered only to post this retarded bullshit...

I really don't see the connection with the topic.

You don't have choice to take the plane when you come from europe to play with america. But you have the choice to play at other place than government-sponsored and bank-sponsored festivals.
Anarchists are not against planes and cars. But anarchists are against governments and banks.

    Huge difference.

I'd say they are doing the opposite of what their band stand for and supporting exactly what their bands are critising.

I dunno know...when someone puts 30 years of his life in a battle, for some reason,a cause and then abandons his principles, just so he could live those remaining few years of pointless existance.i stand by the bands and hope that they didn t forget what this is all about.

You can say what you want about Lydon but i mostly think that he was a twat all along Sid and Lydon, both made punk popular with a shitty image making punk into a fashion by what they wore, yeah Lydon sold out before, in my country the punks were furious that they reunioned again they were critized so much because they only wanted profit

this is danish punks throwing bottles at lydon
Btw they sound so fucking bad here, i liked their first album...

Re: Discharge and Subhumans sold-out ?

in our opinion as long a a band puts diy/underground in the list first, it is ok for us, but the problem i that many of this bands really think that way, when they start playing big shows and they all start charging all this ridiculous prices and guaranteeds for each show, when is the diy scene that actually put them there.

once anarchist artist start bringing money in to their pockets they become selfish - dont support the diy anarko punk or other anarko artist scene and it shouldn't be that way in our opinion if we as anarchist spread the word of revolution in any media is to support our anarko movement not to forget about it or use it like this big PROSTITUTE, were anarchist not catolic rip off's who use their religion as a big PROSTITUTE.

we (massakro) have played with mainstream bands (latinoamerican/spanish talking community) as well as the a few of the most diy anarkopunk bands in the world and still we support diy anarkopunk bands, shows, radio and zine and we dont charge any money for a show and never will (except for gas money this last years with the economy and gas getting more expensive each year).

im not going to go that far, but for example, theres a lot of famous christian bands and artist that make a lot of money charging this big amazing costs for a concerts before they play them or do them but when they are ask to do a show for a christian church, christian rock scene or a christian community show they play for free and only take the money t cover their costs, etc., and this i saw it with my own two eyes nobody told me this or heard it from somebody, so i really dont know what to think anymore.

this is our opinion we respect other peoples ideas.

Cheezus buttfucking christ.... 2!? Will the real Black Flag please stand up? Or, more accurately.... Gimme gimme gimme, gimme some more (of your money) n don't ask what for!

How come so many of these really awesome scene-defining bands have to go and lose sight of what they stood for (and what made them so good) so often? :/ Is being capitalistic just a part of getting old or some bullshit? I'm starting to believe that, I mean the list of really good bands turned really shitty is just too long! As our "old pals" Crass would say, can I resist the carrots that fame and fortune dangle? (no, no you fucking can't.)

But Discharge? Black Flag? Subhumans? Whatever? I mean, so many little bands are like, influenced by these and more...! and Crass, biggest of all? I mean, what does it mean if your musical influence (the foundation) is all.... capitalist in the end??? Are we all just competing for our chance to sell out?

Re: Discharge and Subhumans sold-out ?

I like to think that those bands stopped existing awhile ago and what they have done in the past is still important, just because they turned into greedy capitalists doesn't mean their message is for not, granted it took me awhile to listen to Crass again for the longest time after what they did here >_<, but I bought my albums a long time ago and quite frankly the music spoke to me then as it does now, but believe me when I say we can't just let that shit fly when the bands try to pull the rugs underneath us and destroy everything we've built up and attempted to maintain by sticking their financial greed into something that had little to do with them (I'm talking about Crass mostly). As with Discharge, Subhumans, and the Black Flag reunions it seems to me their milking their popularity to the bitter end. Tragic, but money corrupts. By the way, anyone hear the new Black Flag song? It's so fucking bad it's hilarious :lmao: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzgSSVKwqaw
