I'm in Highschool right now, so I'm not really old enough to know a lot about 70s/80s punk. Right now I love Metalcore and Deathcore, which is Metal mixed Hardcore Punk, but sadly the lyrics arn't very good and I have yet to find an Anarcho band within the genre. So, I would like some help with the Punk genre. I listen to Green Day (Yeah, yeah their mainstream STFU), Dead Kennedys, Crass, Tragedy, Iskra, Black Flag and Agnostic Front. I'm starting to like Hardcore and Crust a lot more too. Suggestions?

Have a look through the Downloads sections
Here are a few newer bands you might like:

Cülo - Hardcore 80's style. Fast as fuck from Chicago

Leprosy - Raw punk, UK influenced from Melbourne, Australia

Burnt Cross - Awesome anarcho-punk from Brighton, UK

If you like metalcore, I feel like you'd like some of the mid to later career Napalm Death. Utopia Banished is an awesome album. If you like Iskra, check out Leper, it's members of Iskra playing death metaly crust with lots of ska influence, someone uploaded it onto this site. Some other bands I feel you might like, based on the few you listed here are Witch Hunt, Wolfbrigade (similar sound to Tragedy), Ballast/Preying Hands (2 different bands, but they share several members melodic crusty punk from Montreal), Subsistance (hardcore-influenced punk band, also from Montreal), Broadcast Zero (political poppy/skate-punk band from Kitchener, Canada), Brutal Youth (Kid Dynamite-style poppy singalong hardcore band, also from Kitchener. They don't have very many political/anarcho lyrics, but they do have personal anarchist politics), End Program, Oi Polloi, MDC (Millions of Dead Cops), Subhumas (There's one from England, and one from Canada. Both different musically, but both worth checking out), D.O.A, Discharge (Why? and Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing are awesome albums. Stay away from Grave New World, unless you want your ears to bleed), Inepsy (imagine if Motorhead and Discharge had a French-Canadian baby), Conflict, DIRT, Iconoclast, Icons of Filth.

That's just off the top of my head, I had a very similar taste in music when I was first getting into anarcho/crust punk. I'm not sure how many of those bands are on this site, but if you know where to look, you can find almost any album on blogs/mediafire.

    Enjoy!

If you wanna get into punk and not just crust or hardcore then check out The Germs, Bad Religion, Nofx, Rancid, and the Adolescents. But a good hardcore/d-beat band is Disclose, they dont have the best production but once you get used to it you start to enjoy the shitty production.

You should definitely start using last.fm if you want some music recommendations. It's great to ask people on here but it can definitely be a bit overwhelming getting tonnes of bands thrown at you (although every band mentioned so far in this thread is AMAZING). On last.fm you download a program that reads your media player and as you listen it generates more bands that's it thinks you'd like (both underground and bigger bands) it's a really neat process, especially if you don't have a tonne of friends you can talk about music with and the like. Good luck though, I'm happy you're getting into the best music there is! :3 Also, don't be ashamed about liking Green Day, legitimately every body does they're just too afraid it will ruin their reputation if they admit it.

for some anarchist or radical metal or metal influenced bands, misery index, assuck, amebix, sore throat, hellmouth, dying fetus, the exploited, insect warfare, extreme noise terror, killtheslavemaster, napalm death, sarcofago, sodom, warcollapse, toxic narcotic, and mouth sewn shut are all great bands. some less metal-influenced bands you should check out include leftover crack, star fucking hipsters, subhumans, refused, gg allin, choking victim, and born against are some of my favorites. a lot of the bands mentioned above are good too, but i tried to avoid repeats.

I completely understand your anxiety, a lot of the time my friends are trying to tell me to listen to so many bands bands bands and I get a little stressed from all the pressure. *AHEM* Mike Generic... Hehe. No really, he's great, he just knows way more about music than I'll ever know. If you need any help with last.fm let me know, I spend way too much time on there.

    Refused.

Their album "The Shape of Punk to Come" is absolutely fucking amazing. Listen to "The Deadly Rhythm" to get a sense of them.

^ Ah I never listen to The Refused as often as I'd like to.

SOADcore, what kind of metalcore do you like? There are/were a couple pretty good bands from around where I'm from that I can send to you, if you want. A Satellite Connecticut, Arise and Ruin (they were awesome before they signed to Victory Records, I still have the old CD), Kingdoms, Farewell to Freeway, and a couple others that aren't coming to mind right now. I'm not a big fan of the genre, but some of the bands in my local music scene, I've grown to like.

Sorry about your deformity (sorry, had to)

BUT imo, majority of the best Hardcore was from '77 - '90

    • Hardcore wise, I'd Say Chaos UK ^_^, Beastie Boys (Before you start freaking out, Pollywog Stew EP and Aglio E Olio are hardcore albums because the Beastie Boys started off as a Hardcore Band, and later became the Rap band that we (me) know and love), Die Kreuzen (Which from my knowledge of Metalcore would be a good step into hardcore), DYS, F-Minus, The Freeze, Gang Green, Negative Approach, The F.U.'s, MDC, The Necros Negative FX, Poison Idea, Reagan Youth, SSD, SOA, Youth of Today, and 7seconds
    • Nardcore (Hardcore from the Oxnard, CA Area) wise i'd say Dr. Know, Ill Repute, RKL, and Scared Straight
    • Crust wise I'd say Doom, Antisect, Sore Throat, Skitsystem, After the Bombs, Nuclear Death Terror, and Aus-Rotten
    • D-Beat wise I'd say Discharge (duh?), The Varukers, and the Victims (But D-Beat and Crust are Amazingly similar, so watch out)

Good New Hardcore (which i learned wasn't an Oxymoron) Would be Ceremony (It's a lot more Thrashcore though), Paint it Black, Floorpunch, Slapshot (they're an newer Hardcore band created by members of the Old Boston Hardcore scene Bands)

IF you like the speed (like I do) of music more, and you like really just like fast shit, I'd go for Thrashcore, Powerviolence, and Grindcore
    • Thrashcore wise, I'd say Electro-Hippies, DRI (early), and Vitamin X
    • Powerviolence i'd say xBrainiax, Real Reggae, Man Is A Bastard, Capitalist Casualties, Spazz, Charles Bronson, Fuck on the Beach, and Magrudergrind
    • Grindcore i'd say Extreme Noise Terror, Sylvester Staline, (If you want a good laugh) Anal Cunt (newer), old Napalm Death, Siege, Venomous Concept, Agathocles, and Dropdead

If you like the Lyrical content, i'd go for Anarcho-punk
Like Conflict, Zounds, Rudimentary Peni, Subhumans and Poison Girls

Some other really good punk bands (i'm not going to categorize these because I don't really want to) Go for Vice Squad, the Descendents, Blitz, The Damned, Cockney Rejects, Dag Nasty (Hardcore, early Emo, shut up), The Devotchkas, Husker Du, The Misfits (DANZIG WAS THE MISFITS, ONLY LISTEN TO THE MISFITS DURING THE DANZIG YEARS, DON'T BUY THEIR MERCHANDISE AT ALL), GG Allin (For a good Laugh), Sham 69, The Stalin, and Saccharine Trust

Majority of the bands I listed are really good bands, but if you honestly care more for the Lyrical content, Stay away from Sylvester Staline, GG Allin, Anal Cunt, and the F.U.'s (F.U.'s are more conservative and are generally laughed at for being more Conservative, but they are good. GG is a Terrorist and majority of the stuff he sang about has to offend. The other two are Grind/Noise bands that create really shocking Songs because they can)

I would link my Last.fm thing here, but i don't believe that my Last.fm radio is the best example of Punk (especially because i also listen to Noise, Garage, Old Rock n' Roll (Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard), Ska, Rap (Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest), and some New Wave (Devo))

If you want the best albums from the bands i listed, PM me and i'll tell you them

I'll re-iterate Paint it Black. Check out CVA and go from there. Also, I didn't see it mentioned but check out Feel the Darkness by Poison Idea. Seriously, check those two albums out and let me know what you think. Neither are strictly anarcho but they're great albums in my opinion and pretty immediate to boot.

They've been around for like 25 years.

Great post though, you listen to good music. I like it when people have open-minded tastes.

FUCK YEAH ISKRA (actally surprised ya dig 'em based on the other bands listed)

So here are some other Blackened Crust Punk bands you should check out...

MARTYRDOD (some members in common with SKITSYSTEM who rule as well though aren't so Black Metal-ish)

    ORDER OF THE VULTURE

    DISHAMMER

...and, not to be a nit-picky asshole, but modern Metalcore really doesn't have much to do with legit Hardcore or Metal (though earlier Metalcore or "Metallic Hardcore" definitely did, and there still are some more "legit" Metalcore bands out there)

[Edit: I can't fix it, it'll be in place forever that i'm an idiot and talk out of my ass]

And thank you~ I was going to add a shit ton of Ska Bands to that list, but i had to take in the fact that he listened to Metalcore and wanted Hardcore and Crust
