    Ekkaia Biography

Neocrust band from Spain. No longer active.
    ---

Ekkaia was a neocrust band from A Coruña, Spain. Ekkaia started in 1999.

In Tolkien lore, "Ekkaia" (also known as Vaiya, the Outer Ocean, the Outer Sea, or the Encircling Sea) was a vast, cold and dark ocean completely surrounding the world of Arda, at least until the Undying Lands were removed from the "circles of the world" in the cataclysm near the end of the Second Age.

The chosen name of the band can be interpreted as humanity being the outer sea/ocean because we operate out of the natural order whilst disrupting everything for our own benefit and encircle the entire planet to use it as our own enslaving trench when we are unnecessarily at war with our own kind. Humanity is vast, cold, Headless / Heartless and full of darkness. However, we pale in comparison to the unforgiving nihilistic void of outer space. We are going to get forcibly removed as we deserve when nature reclaims what is hers with the impending cataclysm Mother Earth is plotting from hurting so much due to us. It has already started.

Ekkaia itself was enclosed within the Walls of the Night. Like we are enclosed within the walls of our own bellic ignorance. Ekkaia cannot support any ships except the boats of Ulmo; the ships of the Númenóreans that tried to sail on it sank, drowning the sailors. Like humanity only supports the 1% in power whilst the rest suffer. Ekkaia may have been changed into the upper atmosphere of the world like we are going to get absorbed back into the bowels of nature and digested by the planet.

Ekkaia (at first spelled Eccaia) was a Quenya word. Seems to mean "far off, distant, far away".

In their earlier records they had a prominent real screamo / emo violence touch with some melodic death metal influences. In their later releases, they evolved into a darker crust sound, in the vein of Tragedy; for whom they opened several times during the time Tragedy visited Spain in the early aughts.

They can be considered the cornerstone in the Spanish crust scene and one of the most notorious and legendary bands of the neocrust variety, a hardcore subgenre that they helped pioneer and expand beyond what Tragedy had done at the time as well as subsequently influencing important bands such as Fall of Efrafa, Downfall of Gaia and Alpinist plus countless other bands that found and still find inspiration in them.

Ekkaia's sound and approach to their version of crust is characterised mainly by a combination of melodic and tremolo picking-styled riffing predominantly derived from Tragedy's signature melodic and epic leads as well as frequent use of the guitar pick slide technique to signal the transition into faster or more grand and emotional riffs/passages seamlessly intertwined with furious d-beat-galloping-styled drumming onslaught plus some downtempo shifts that build a balance between tension and violent release.

Sometimes melancholic, other times majestic/powerful guitar leads that go hand in hand with dual male harsh vocals that can be classified between a mix of crust gutturals and screamo-esque shrieks, thick and girthy bass lines; are topped all with lyrical themes that criticise modern civilization and our dependance on technology, human ignorance and hypocrisy, the tendency of man to kill everything in its path, irreparable damage to Mother nature, all the lives that have been lost in the name of "progress", our disinterest for our fellow humans misery and suffering thus spurring a desperate call to arms to end it because we are capable of that, we simply refuse.

Ekkaia sound so bitterly angry, insulted, offended, indignant, disappointed, hurt and sad due to what has been taken from them and everyone else. Just even more Tragedy. The human mind, will, heart, spirit and soul being completely and utterly crushed by the "progress" and "civilization" machine.

A literal worldwide concentration camp. Now, it is too fucking late to be sorry or lament. Just even more Tragedy. "We will leave. We shall not partake in thine game of weeping smiles and tears that laugh secretly before a species bleached with Death. Man is Death and you are Death."

The Spanish were ruthless, merciless systematic conqueror-murderers that killed, raped, genocided and pillaged an entire continent along with their fellow Europeans. However, the Native Americans are not innocent either. They were more of the same. With their own killing, raping, pillaging and terror empires. They simply happened to not be technologically advanced enough and unlucky enough to be very susceptible to European diseases. Therefore, they got annihilated. Now, should extraterrestrial beings show up here for reasons, we all know who the Native Americans and Spanish will be. And the Spanish Crust scene keeps that spirit alive against The Human Virus.

"We have brought this on ourselves".
