(Reuters) - President Barack Obama's already stalled bid to close the U.S. prison for suspected terrorists in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, would be blocked under legislation introduced on Thursday in the Senate.

Offered by six senators -- five Republicans and former Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman -- the measure would prohibit funding alternatives to the facility.

"Terrorists should be detained at Guantanamo Bay, and tried according to the laws of military justice," Senator Scott Brown, flanked by colleagues, told reporters on Capitol Hill.

Introduction of the bill came three days after Obama lifted a two-year freeze on new military trials at Guantanamo Bay and suggested that Congress was hurting national security by blocking attempts to move some trials to U.S. civilian courts.

Administration officials said Obama still wants to close the prison, which they have called a recruiting tool for anti-American militants, but gave no time frame.

Obama has failed to overcome objections by Republicans and a number of fellow Democrats to transferring some detainees to U.S. prisons and trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, mastermind of the September 11, 2001, attacks, and others in federal courts.

Sponsors of the Senate legislation noted in a joint statement that "the American people and a bipartisan majority of Congress have rejected civilian trials in the United States for those directly responsible" for the attacks.

In addition to protecting the prison at Guantanamo Bay, the legislation seeks to provide greater clarity in the often uncertain treatment and prosecution of suspected terrorists.

For example, it would restrict transfer of prisoners to foreign countries and require that suspected terrorists be held by the military unless the U.S. defense secretary certifies it would be in a national security interest to put them in civilian custody.

Lieberman said similar legislation has been offered in the Republican-led House and he expects the Democratic-led Senate to pass it with bipartisan support.

Some how I'm less than surprised,
By now it's un-American for U.S. officials let alone the president to tell the truth

Richard Nixon, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Lyndon B. Johnson, Robert McNamara, George Bush (Sr. and Jr.), John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Dwight D Eisenhower, and now Barack Obama have all lied directly to the american people. (And that list is just all I can remember at the moment)

    God bless this country :ecouteurs:

So why is it that the same man that not to long ago declared that the treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo bay and other military prisons under American and N.A.T.O. supervision was illegal and immoral as torture was used to get results from the so called illegal combatants is now looking like an hypocrite since the same is happening under his watch in both Afghanistan and Iraque and the treatment of Brad Manning(the whistle blower on the Wiki leaks scandal) would be considered by many in the West to be itself maybe just a tad over the top since he provided the disclosure of those sensitive documents could be viewed as a public service but he will now face the full onslaught of the American military justice(not the civil courts one)and so Mr.Obama is now looking like his got egg on his face but the reason(s) are not really rocket science as when he first made those remarks he was still trying to get voted and everything was game, now that he is it's obviously not a thing that seems to be bothering him any more,I knew it looked too good to be true...

The president lied to his people?! Well that was both unexpected and totally uncalled for!

Obama, just like Bush, Clinton, Carter and Nixon, is simply a figurehead. He says what his party tells him to say and he does what they tell him to do.

Between Ike and Lying B. Johnson came Kennedy, intensifying the northamerican engagement in Indochina, starting a "clandestine" war in Laos and Kambodcha, finally resulting in the destruction of both countries and the almost complete termination of ethnic groups like the Meo, H'mong and other Montagnard people.
And let's not forget the dirty little games against the cuban "communists", the Bay of Pigs, the undercover CIA-war and finally the Cuba-krisis, dragging the world to the brink of a nuclear war.

One must remember that Guantanamo is not officially a "Prison" but actually A U.S. NAVAL BASE! For reasons I don't remember it was /is the ONLY U.S. military installation that was allowed to remain after The Cuban Revolution. The Guantanamo Naval Base is located at the southernmost end of Cuba outside the town of Santiago.

It was only after 9/11 (11-9) that Guantanamo started being used to hold those detained accused of terrorist activity and/or being connected either directly or indirectly to such organizations as Al Quaida to The Taliban.

So remember, folks: Guantanamo=U.S. Naval Base first, Concentration camp second.

It remained there because we just refused to leave. Cuba had no way of forcing the US to leave. Of course the Cubans had Soviet military muscle on their side, but the Soviets weren't going to risk nuclear war over a military base in Cuba. Of course it nearly happened anyway (Cuban Missile Crisis), but when that didn't lead to anything, that probably guaranteed that the base could stay there as long as the US chose to remain.

I seem to recall it was used to house Haitian refugees under Clinton and is being used for the same purpose under Trump, So it's a naval , prison and torture facility. A one stop shop for US foreign policy oppression.
