I was thinking that APN should come to consensus of a Top 10s for bands or albums in divisions like genres, regions and maybe a list for people getting into Anarcho-Punk (and I suppose Crust and Oi!).

    Thoughts?

    Wouldn't that create a hierarchy?

I wouldn't really see the point to have a top 10 for each genre. But instead of a "top 10", maybe some "mandatory listening" categories, with no ranking, but long and detailed reviews of the record, the band's history, its political or social context, maybe a couple of lyrics (with translations?). That would be excellent, but quite a bit of work as well.

i personally think by genre first and region after that. no recommended list tho. but setting up personal recommended lists and posting them would be sweet.

I suppose I meant more of a recommendation list, because I found it pretty damn hard getting into Crust, just because its so damn underground and hard (at least for me) to get into, in contrast to more mainstream genres like Heavy Metal that has more public awareness.

And punkmarr, don't get into that bullshit hierarchy thing. Nobody is forcing anybody to listen to any records.

So on an anarchist forum we shouldn't worry about "bullshit hierarchy"?

Thin end of the wedge, though y'see? If we start saying one band is better than another, and arguing (what will certainly be) endlessly about the results of such a list, then we stop thinking about our music scene as an anarchist music scene. We'd be labelling and categorising and commodifying groups that ought to be exempt from such crass (excuse the pun) trappings of commercial music culture.

Indeed, asserting that Discharge > Green Day is full anti-anarkeyz. ;)

The idea that one band is better than another is fine. Hell, I think entire genres are shit. Mostly dubstep. The idea that we should all agree on which bands are better is flawed, though. We're different people of different ages & tastes from different locations - why should we all agree?

How about a thread where everyone posts their own top 10? :ecouteurs:

[edit] green day is wayyyyyy better than discharge! \m/

See, I wrote that all drunk in the middle of the night, and on re-reading I wonder if I maybe went a little too far... In fact, I wonder if I was taking the piss. I can never really tell when I don't remember what I was thinking at the time.

For the record, I own two Green Day albums, but only one Discharge album and an EP...

Thank you for spelling it out...I guess I was trying to get SOAD to figure that out...and as for top 10 lists they pretty much already exist in various forms on this forum...

One of my pet peeves is when bands or promoters make flyers where one or two bands logos are huge and then there are three or four bands in tiny print, it doesn't take a lot of effort to make the bands logos the same size and random, just another example of hierarchy in punk and anarcho music... it's so easy to make fellow musicians feel good about the whole thing by forcing ego to take a back seat. But what the hell do I know... :)

Case in point, although this is a lovely flyer, do our friends in Di Nigunim really deserve to be in tiny print, and does the order of the bands suggest some sort of hierarchy? Well obviously no and yes...one of the original tenets of punk was that we were all equal and anybody can do this and an obvious rejection of the rock establishment and general music business...how and why have we lost our way? :/

Judging from the flyer, the bird-show will be the main event of the gig. ;)

I think a chronological hierarchy on flyers is fair enough, logos could certainly be the same size. Personally, it seems like too small a thing to worry about. But then you could easily argue why not do it right, if it's so small and simple to do?

Regarding a top 10, I could see some sort of use. Anarcho-punk is a fairly broad church (Conflict sound nothing like Rudimentary Peni sound nothing like The Mob etc). Perhaps not a top 10 but maybe a few varied bands of note and then bands that fit a comparative style as follow up recommendations. But this is just thinking aloud and I do agree that there are plenty of recommendation threads here already.

A thread where I agree with everyone, jejejejejeje
A top 10 would be both somewhat pointless and painstaking. Can anyone get two punks to agree on anything? Let alone the best bands...

At the same time, I understand the somewhat steep 'learning curve' inre: decent punk, especially crust punk, certainly providing ppl who are new and interested in exploring this genre some sort of 'punk/crust for beginners' guide may be useful. (i mean i hate tons of shit, especially a lot of the shit it took me to listen/read to get to decent punk/anarchism, some sort of 'shortcut' could be useful.) At the same time, I'm not into this idea, like mar refers to, of making certain bands the 'heroes' of the genre. Its a tricky question, perhaps a chronology could work better? Again, it has its problems.

I'm not sure, basically I'm willing to revisit a previous thread about formulating some sort of 'reading guide' inre: anarchism, but I'm less willing to provide a 'top punx albums' guide, the reasons should be obvious. Nevertheless, if we do, as we claim to do, only host decent music, then perhaps a '10 most downloaded albums' link/thread could be useful? Especially given we upload shitloads more music here than my internetz allows me to download monthly.
