    Rites of Spring Biography

    WEBSITE
Rites Of Spring, from Washington, DC, was part of a new wave of bands that appeared in 1984-1985, originating from the DC hardcore scene, that are considered by many to be the first wave of emo. The group formed from the ashes of Insurrection, a hardcore band featuring Brendan Canty (drums), Michael Fellows (bass), and Guy Picciotto (guitar). Following Insurrection's demise, Guy, Brendan, and Michael kept jamming together and guitarist Eddie Janney soon joined the mix, while Guy added vocals to his responsibilities. Although the band's live appearances were rare (only around a dozen in 2 years), the band was known for their passionate live shows (which could allegedly move some audience members to tears). Guy's poetic lyrics and impassioned delivery led the group to be tagged as "emotional hardcore" (later shortened to "emo") by some critics and naysayers.

During their life span, the group released one LP and one 7" EP. They split upon the release of the EP, in January of 1987, when Michael Fellows left the band. The rest of the band went on to form [a=One Last Wish] with guitarist Michael Hampton (Janney moved to bass) who split after playing only a half a dozen shows and recording an LP (which went unreleased for many years). The members of Rites Of Spring reformed as [a=Happy Go Licky] in 1987, pursuing a sound very different from Rites Of Spring.

    ---

Rites of Spring was an American emocore band from Washington, D.C. Although they were only together from the spring of 1984 through the winter of 1986, they helped define the Revolution Summer sound along with Dag Nasty and Embrace, among others.

Following the band's dissolution, singer and guitarist Guy Picciotto, guitarist Eddie Janney, and drummer Brendan Canty formed One Last Wish with Embrace alumnus Michael Hampton. The three later joined former Rites bassist Mike Fellows for a quasi-reincarnation of Rites of Spring named Happy Go Licky, releasing an LP/CD of various live concert recordings though never producing any studio work. Picciotto and Canty eventually teamed up with the former Embrace singer Ian MacKaye (owner of the band’s label, Dischord Records) in Fugazi.

Rites of Spring was the band’s self-titled debut album from 1985. Its twelve songs were recorded at Inner Ear Studios in February of 1985, and released on vinyl in June of that year as Dischord Records #16. The album was rereleased on CD and cassette in 1987, with an additional track from the same session, "Other Way Around", as well as the four songs from the Rites' follow-up EP, All Through a Life, Dischord #22. The CD and cassette originally retained the number "16" while the 1991 repress, as well as the 2001 remastered version of the same seventeen songs, were numbered "16CD" and given the new title End on End.

The band are named after Igor Stravinsky's famous ballet composition entitled The Rite of Spring/Le Sacre du printemps. The piece is widely dissonant and the context of the ballet is extremely bleak, revolving around pagan rituals.

For bcompany credits/b—such as Manufactured By, copyright credits, etc., please use bl33194/b when credited as such. If credited as Dischord Records, use this profile.

bAttention: Please do always add the postpaid price from the back cover and the country of manufacturing to the notes. It is important to figure out the country and the release date and to avoid double entries. Enter country according to the currency of the price listed on the sleeve (almost always US dollars), NOT the country of manufacture. From 1984 into the 2000s, Dischord manufactured almost exclusively in France and England, but correct country is generally US.
