    Ishmael

Ishmael by David Quinn, while not an explicitly anarchist book, is a philosophical manifesto in the the form a novel that does a superb job of identifying the roots of human captivity. It's the kind of book that makes you question ideas that you have taken for granted since early childhood because they are so ubiquitous in our culture. It presents concepts that I consider extremely important for anarchists, and mankind in general, to understand in order to see how and why the world has become so fucked up, and what can be done about it. Has anyone read it? Any thoughts?

    Beer and Revolution

    Any one read this book

Beer and Revolution: The German Anarchist Movement in New York City, 1880-1914

This is what one reviewer had to say about it -

"Beer and Revolution is an extraordinary piece of work, and a rare find. I am astonished at the level of sophistication: it advances recent scholarly developments in charting geopolitical space and resurrects the kind of setting - a mixture of bohemianism and political radicalism - that is of increasing interest to young people today."

Paul Buhle, co-editor of the Encyclopedia of the American Left

The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. It shows the horrors, treason, and cruelty of a state, parliament, monarchy etc. All that while Machiavelli is being serious when he is teaching others to use these "tactics" to garner power in order to become good statesmen and princes.

    Ian Glasper books

Anyone here read any of Ian's punk books? He's done 3 documenting UK82,Anarcho, and the Uk hardcore scene.

I've read the first two, and I think he did a really good job with both books, especially the anarcho one titled "Day the Country Died. He documents the larger and smaller bands, as well as interviewing them so you get to learn their history threw their words.

I'd like to get his new UK Hardcore book, it's supposed to have Doom, Electro Hippies, and more.

George Orwell - Homage to Catalunya

Chronicles well the backstabbing received by the Spanish Anarchists at the hands of Communists in the Civil War, as well as dispels the myth of Orwell being sympathetic to the right wing.

I'm currently reading 'An Account, Much Abbreviated, of the Destruction of the Indies' by Bartolome De Las Casas (translated: A. Hurley, edited: F.W. Knight). It's the translation of some letters a spanish bishop wrote to prince felipe informing him about the atrocities committed by spanish conquistadors on the native peoples of the 'Indies' (what we now know as 'latin' america and the Caribbean).

P.S.: Can anyone recommend an accurate book on the 'great potato famine'?

Summer To Do List: Anarcho Books & Movies

    Ahoy!

First off, I would like to apologize to any admin who may crucify me for making a repeat thread. I'm sure someone has made a thread similar to this but I promise I tried my hardest to find it and I couldn't. < 3

This summer I am living in a city where I have approximately 3 friends and a cat, in an apartment which is usually empty, and have a lot of bandwidth. I've got a few reads and watches lined up for this summer but I need more more more!! What are some of your favorite anarchist related books or movies (or other form of entertainment if you wish) that I can indulge in while willowing in loneliness? They can range from actual anarchist literature, historical fiction, utopian or dystopian socities, I'll take just about anything, I'm not too picky when it comes to this sort of thing. I'll start the thread off with some of my favorites, if anyone else is interested.

    BOOKS
The Many Headed Hydra - Peter Linebaugh & Marcus Rediker
    1984 - George Orwell
    The Road - Cormac McCarthy
Oryx and Crake - Margaret Atwood
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
    Island - Aldous Huxley
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - Philip K. Dick
    Wrong - Chris Walters
When The Prisoners Ran Walpole - Jamie Bissonette

It's nearing 4am here and I'm having troubles thinking of movies off of the top of my head so I'll post some if anyone interested later in the tread.

Thank You in advanced!!! < 3

Just ordered a copy of The Primal Screamer by Nick Blinko, republished by PM Press. I've been trying to track down some of Blinko's books ever since a guy at the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair told me he had nightmares for a week after reading one of them.

Right now i'm reading en svensk anarkist berättar ( A swedish anarkist story).
It's a really good book about a anarkist named Nisse Lätt and hes life all from figting in spain with the durutti column to being one of sweden's biggest agitators.
it's one of the best book i have ever read. but i don't think you can get it in english if you find a english version of it get it you will not be disappointed!

It shows how civilization functions as well as providing tactics for how it should be confronted. Essential reading.

What am I currently reading? Shit... Half way stopping point of Stephen King's It, good but not being finished anytime soon. Some Lovecraft a good while ago and I still got some more to read. Both from the library... probably overdue. What else? I'm about 2/3 through Dick's VALIS, really good, gotta finish that... I love Dick.

Everyone should read Against His-Story, Against Leviathan! by Fredy Perlman, go do it, now!

Ursula K. Leguin 'the dispossessed', sometimes hard to read but a good futuristic anarchist; utopia/ dystopia; too bad she didn't write more on this theme.
