Responsibility claim for the bomb which was detonated at the nationalist party’s local headquarters in Aspropyrgos in the early hours of December 4th, 2012:

The Antifascist Front/Informal Anarchist Federation (FAI) claims responsibility for the planting of a homemade explosive device at the West Attica regional offices of the Golden Dawn in the suburb of Aspropyrgos, at the 17th km of the Athens–Corinth national road. The particular characteristics of the location (an area with hardly any traffic, especially during night hours) gave us the advantage of planting the explosive device without having to make a warning phone call — something that would perhaps prompt the cops to deactivate the clockwork device which we would use, in order to protect the offices of their collaborators and friends, the chrissavgites/goldendawners.

Besides, the comrades who detonated the explosive device had checked the perimeter of the area prior to the attack, so that no random passerby would get injured. It was not our intention to cause damage to a signs-inscriptions shop on the ground floor, since our target was exclusively the Golden Dawn offices on the first floor. But we have to make it clear that those who tolerate being housed in the same building as the fascists are responsible for bringing the problem to their doorstep. Consequently, they should ask for compensation from their dastardly neo-Nazi neighbours.

We chose to strike the Golden Dawn’s offices because we believe that, when it comes to the fascists, one has to strike first as opposed to waiting for them to make the first move. We are not going to sit and wait and do nothing while the serpent is being hatched. We refuse to accept the passivity of public denunciations as well as the role of an eternal victim that cannot find the guts to openly confront the fascists. We detest the humanitarian hypocrisy and the professional respectability of politicians and journalists who demonize the Golden Dawn in order to consecrate the democracy of demagoguery. We get angry with any constitutional appeal to legality as well as the ridiculous plead that ‘the Golden Dawn should be outlawed’.

To us, it’s not even an issue about whether the Golden Dawn should be outlawed or not but rather that it should be extinct. Only then will Elias Kasidiaris — this effeminate kid with the thousand nervous tics [sic] — understand he is making a huge mistake when he states [as the party’s spokesman] that ‘neither bombs nor bullets can stop the Golden Dawn’. Besides, big words never helped anyone.

Of course we are aware that today, apart from some dozens of shaved headed meatballs with a peanut for a brain, the Golden Dawn has an organized party structure (which also implies state funding of millions of euros) and an extended popular footing in a part of society. We are also aware that not everyone among the thousands who voted for them is a neo-Nazi. Their voting body is the quaint mosaic of a conservative mob consisting of fossils such as the monarchy-dictatorship partisans, of dastardly young males marvelling at the goldendawners’ militaristic lifestyle, of disillusioned democrats dazzled by the hardboiled surface and populism of the far-righters, of neopoors whose nationalistic fantasies are the only property they have left, of frightened petty-bourgeois people who have projected their financial dead-end onto the foreigners and turned it into hatred, and of dozens of other grievous social caricatures that are trying to compensate for their misery and cowardice by adopting the pseudo-macho attitude of the Golden Dawn.

The bulk of these voters are not neo-Nazis, yet that doesn’t mean they are innocent. They are just the tail of the serpent. Of course there’s no immunity for them but the head comes first.

Very often the Golden Dawn uses some anti-systemic rhetoric in order to keep this tail intact. The anti-systemic Golden Dawn is the Golden Dawn that receives state funding, that is led by a member of the KYP intelligence service (i.e. Nikolaos Michaloliakos was in the official payroll of the Greek secret agency in its first phase), that consists of ruffians, who snitch on their own former henchmen — as is the case of Haris Kousoumvris [who was then also denounced by the Nazi scum after publishing a book under the title ‘Demolishing the Myth of the Golden Dawn’] — and make deals with the police on give-and-take of intelligence information about their new recruits, so that they can map the ‘far-right scene’. It is also a well known fact that the Golden Dawn party, beyond the staged skirmishes with cops, is in excellent friendly terms with the repressive forces, drawing from the police ranks a great part of its voters. So, having the cops to cover their backs, they go round unperturbed, parading their pseudo-machismo by kicking empty cartons that immigrant street vendors use or by stabbing others…

In an apparent antipode, the professional jesters of the Left are trying to deal with the issue of immigrants by scattering the magical glitter of ‘humanitarianism’. However, dealing with refugees cannot mitigate any scoundrelism. There can be no excuse for anyone who rapes (whether that person is ‘Greek’ or ‘immigrant’), nor any pity for anyone who ties up, gags and tortures other people to steal some money from them instead of going to rob a bank. So, all conservatism and social acceleration of fascism is in fact increased by the leftist and anarchist rhetoric on defense, as expressed in vague generalizations of ‘not guilty’ like the slogan ‘we are all immigrants’.

Ethnicity and diversity can neither be a criterion of guilt, nor a presumption of innocence. Every person must be judged on the basis of his/her choices and actions, not on grounds of race or skin color.

Nowadays the Golden Dawn members and their followers find refuge in the cowardice of patriotism. It’s the era of togetherness among the frightened. The Antifascist Front/Informal Anarchist Federation is fighting against the regime of fear. Breaking away from bureaucratic platforms, from defense, we go on the attack. We do not expect anything and anyone. There are no excuses. It’s time to end passivity and defeatism. We attack the fascists by any means — with beatings, knives, screwdrivers, fire, bombings and bullets.

We are cartographers charting the goldendawners’ moves, we ambush them, we trash them with punches and kicks, we burn their motorcycles, and we ‘withdraw’ them from their pretentious bullying. Better to cast some of them down to the ground now, before they start believing that they can lift their heads for good. It doesn’t take any militaristic specialization; it takes only consciousness, courage and determination… There is also no need for any lycophilia (spurious friendship) or any adventurism for the sake of opportunistic gain within the ephemeral alliances ‘against the fascist threat’ that highlight the Golden Dawn as a countervailing force to democracy, thus acquitting the parliamentary dictatorship of all its crimes.

However, the most dangerous fascism is not the quaint shaven donuts of the Golden Dawn but the kind of fascism which is not visible to everyone; the fascism which is hidden behind the velvet courtesies of the democratic totalitarianism; the statutory fascism of bosses, multinational companies, courts, of the prison, the army, the police, the sterile knowledge of school, the church, of laws, advertisements, control in everyday life, boredom and loneliness that reign in the modern concentration camps of metropolises. As much as they may hide behind a wall of uniforms and firearms, all these tyrants of our lives will always be in the firing line of the Antifascist Front/Informal Anarchist Federation.

The attack against the Golden Dawn is also (albeit prematurely, prior to the announced dates) a salute and an active participation to the call that the Anticivilization Fraction of the Earth Liberation Front (FAI) made through a double bombing attack in Mexico by inviting to an International Direct Action Week for our anarchist brother Mario López, who is imprisoned there.

Comradely regards to all our brothers and sisters who make the Informal Anarchist Federation a reality…

May our insurgency for freedom set fire to our hearts.
THINK REVOLUTIONARILY – ACT OFFENSIVELY

Antifascist Front/Informal Anarchist Federation-International Revolutionary Front
(FAI-IRF)

PS. We also send our conspiratorial salutes to everyone who’s attacking the fascists, from Veria to Patras and from Crete and Agrinio to Xanthi. Each and every one of the beatings against goldendawners and the destruction of their offices are part of the antifascist front. Fascism can only really be trashed with deeds, not words…

I don't understand why they say that. Greek fascists have hit people many, many times. It's a counter-attack, not a preventive attack.

I agree. This counts as retaliation for all the shit they have done over the years to countless numbers. Fuck the Neo-Nazi dicks. They deserve to be bombed. I would drag each out on to street and flog the fuck bags until the street ran red with their blood. Then they would be strung up by their toes to the buildings they use as their head quarters, and have a person from each ethnicity and GLBT throw stones at their battered bodies. Sorry. The psychopath in me came out. It's just that we can't go back in time to do it to the ones that started this. We just have to take it out on the people that carry on their hate filled ways. FUCK NAZIS!

ARA Releases Information On Golden Dawn North America After A Two And A Half Month Intelligence Operation

From: http://antiracistaction.org/?q=node%2F178

"Contrary to recent International news Greece's neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn is NOT setting up shop in Chicago. We tricked tricked them. Their vaunted Chicago expansion was in fact an Anti-Racist Action intelligence operation. We are releasing some of the fruits of that operation now.

This release is in three parts:

1. As a claim of a small victory in our ongoing struggle against fascism, racism, and anti-immigrant hatred.
2. To release documentation on leaders, members, and supporters of Golden Dawn in North America, Greece, and wherever else they may be hiding.
3. To call for others to flood the Golden Dawn Headquarters and New York branch in an effort not only to destroy Golden Dawn's ability to grow, but to destroy the credibility of anyone who might want to sincerely help them.

Over the past two and a half months, Anti-Racist Action has been involved in a quiet campaign to stop the nationalist organization from expanding in North America. One of our goals, which we achieved with great success, was to gain intelligence on members of New York's Golden Dawn chapter, their supporters, and members within the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York who might be sympathetic to their views.

We chose Chicago as a fictitious base for our operation because of its strong antifascist presence and the massive Greek population affected by the diaspora in and around the city. To us, it seemed highly probable that this may be one of the next major battlegrounds between Golden Dawn and anti-fascists in the US, and we wanted to lay claim before they could.

One of the main ways to halt any nazi organization from expanding, is by causing them to doubt any networking request they may receive from abroad. For this, we need your help. Here's what we did, and what you can do, too, to stop them.

---

The first step was rather easy. Because we'd been watching the white nationalist website Stormfront for since its inception, we knew that there were several members who were sympathetic to, even envious of, Golden Dawn's approach to neo-Nazism. Several of these members were of Greek descent, and some resided in Greece. We assumed that someone had to know something. It was merely a matter of picking the slow antelope from the herd.

After a dozen or so posts, we gained trust from Panos8814, a member who had posted a translation of the Golden Dawn manifesto. We offered to help with future translations, and he gave us a contact to Patreus, another member, who was more connected with the organization in Greece. Patreus and Panos8814 divulged important information without ever meeting face to face, to an anonymous person with a four day old account. This is a major fail for Golden Dawn.

Patreus told us that he would keep us updated on any important news regarding Golden Dawn in the United States. Panos8814 and Patreus both encouraged us to contact the organization through the main website, and Panos gave us step-by-step instructions on what to say and who to contact. This exposed their security methods and people in Greece to us as well. Patreus mentioned that the International chapters function autonomously from the main Greek organization, but that it still needed to go through Greece's Golden Dawn.

We told Golden Dawn that we intended to start a chapter in Chicago and wanted help with the protocol on how do to that correctly. Within days, we had an email from Golden Dawn headquarters.

In our first email from Golden Dawn, we were told to contact Emmanouil Lallas, controller of New York Golden Dawn. We were given a Facebook account, email address, and phone number. Through his Facebook, we found that Lallas was friends with Demetrios Demetrios, the third vice president of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, though not with any of the other members of the board. After a couple web searches, we found that he had spoken at a workshop put on by the Federation in May 2012.

Over time Golden Dawn gave us critical information, which we used to locate it's membership in the United States. Some of their membership is listed below. Feel free to discuss current events and race relations with them via phone, email, fax and in person. We hope that if we can flood Golden Dawn with fictitious chapter requests, they won't know who to trust.

Greek anarchists on anarchist movement in Greece

Last weekend in the largest show of strength in over a decade thousands of anarchists marched to protest against the violent eviction of the squats of Villa Amalias and Skaramagka and Patision Sts in Athens and also the very repressive climate that police and state have created the last months in Greece.

Below is an interview with one of the largest anarchist groups in Greece- the Anti-Authoritarian Movement (AK) in relation to the present political and social climate in Greece, the threat posed by the far-right and of course the work of the anarchist movement.

Can you provide some background regarding the current crisis and austerity programme in Greece and how it is affecting the working class?

The current crisis has affected deeply the Greek society. Unemployment and poverty has increased hugely. There are homes without food or electricity. Everyday people are losing their work. Lots of people move abroad in order to work. And we think that this is only the beginning. It’s actually another “shock doctrine” experiment.

Anarchism has strong roots in many parts of the globe. When did it first emerge in Greece and what is it current strengths and weaknesses?

Anarchists have been present in Greece from the 1900’s. The big rise of the anarchist movement was in the 1980s though. There are plenty of strengths and weaknesses. We can just mention the participation and solidarity on social struggles of workers, immigrants or prisoners, the strength in the youth, the struggle against repression and against the capital. There must be a special mention on the struggle and the clashes against the IMF cuts and measures.

Who are the Anti-Authoritarian Movement (AK) and what type of activities and struggles are they involved in in terms of unions and community campaigns?

AK is a network of assemblies in some greek cities. There is a variety of struggles we are involved in. At the moment our main campaigns have to do with the support of the workers of “VioMe” factory, who are about to take over the factory and work it in a self – organized manner, the struggle in solidarity to the civilians of Chalkidiki, Kilkis and Thrace, against the goldmines that are going to be built in their regions (a fast-track investment which would be a catastrophe for the area) and generally the support of local struggles against the catastrophic and exploitative choices of the state and capital. Also, in Thessaloniki we participate to two social centers (“Micropolis” and “Scholeio” ) where at the moment we try to create new self – organized forms and structures of social and solidarity economy in order to respond to the crisis and to work on a proposition for a different way of life, a different society. You see, things are in a really critical condition now in Greece and there are basically two routes to choose either mass brutality or creativity. In this process we collaborate with lots of people and groups from Thessaloniki and from all around Greece who work in similar projects. Last but not least we should mention our focus to the antifacist struggle which is also a crucial issue as the radical neo-nazi party of Greece continues rising….

How many anarchist prisoners are incarcerated in Greek’s prisoners?

There must be over 20. Most of them have been accused for armed struggle.

Many sections of the foreign media such as The Guardian Newspaper have focused on the worrying rise of the far-right Golden Dawn party comparing the situation today with the Weimer Republic during the early 1930s. Who are they and what are anarchists and anti-fascists doing to combat their influence?

There is a rise of the neonazi and not just far-right Golden Dawn party. Not only the crisis but the state has created this rise. Golden Dawn was always a tool of the state where police couldn’t act. The state has acted by far more nazi way than the Nazis. The creation of detention centers for the refugees, the beatings of the demonstrators, the refugees, the recent tortures of the antifascists in the police headquarters, the well known brotherhood between police and Golden Dawn (50% of the police voted for it)… All these are turned now into a rise for the Nazis.

With the rise of Golden dawn, there is also a rise of the antifascist movement. Except of the try to inform the society about the role of Golden Dawn and its relations with the police, there is also a struggle to keep them off the streets and minimize their presence in the society. So far, it seems that we have the strength to do it despite their help from the state.

What is your perspective regarding the rise of the radical leftist party Syriza and did many anarchists vote for them in the last election?

First of all, Syriza is not radical at all. We will remind our announcement after the last elections. “We welcome Syriza in authority’s hell”. Syriza gained this rise from the movement in Syntagma Square but it is not the movement. It is a leftist party struggling to be government. We don’t know how many of the anarchists voted Syriza. We know that our assembly –Thessaloniki’s- didn’t vote at all.

Despite their being over dozen general strikes the current administration under New Democracy continues to impose vicious austerity measures at the behest of the IMF-EU. What do you think should be the next step and what role anarchists should play in these struggles?

It’s hard to predict the next step. One thing we understood, after struggling against a really determined repressive regime throughout the last 3 years, is that the “traditional” ways of struggling against their policies are not really effective at the moment. So nowadays, we try to create new bonds with different parts of the society which will help us resist and build something new. We will try to show to the society that there is an alternative way without the state and the capital. It’s a hard way, we know it but we wouldn’t be struggling for it if we don’t think it is possible. We can’t talk on behalf of all anarchists, we speak for our choices and strategy as AK.

What role can anarchists play outside of Greece in helping the movement?

The part of solidarity is so important at the moment. It helps people to keep on struggling and encourage them. It is vital also to press the authorities. It is so helpful to see that there are comrades and people out of your country who care about you and what is happening here. We feel we are not alone in this attack of the state and the capital. In addition we always look for meetings and collaborations with groups and collectives of Europe and especially from the PIIGS countries to share thoughts, experiences and forms of struggle. We shouldn’t be alone in this. You shouldn’t be alone. We are all together. For that reason during the last year we participate to the “European” anti-capitalistic network M31 (http://march31.net/).

We appeal to the antifascists who have been alerted by the rise of the neonazi Golden Dawn and to those who stand in solidarity with the greek people. Our call for international solidarity has now grown into an international antifascist movement.

Demos outside greek embassies and conculates are now being organised in London (UK), Dublin and Derry (Ireland), Barcelona and Ossona (Catalunya), Lyon (France), Tampere (Finland), Chicago and New York (USA) and news for initiatives in other countries are streaming in.

We ask for more demos in solidarity with the greek movement, that is preparing for a big show of strength in Syntagma Square on the 19th of January. It is not just an international affair, it is part of a concerted effort to build a movement that will target rising fascism and racism in Europe and in the whole world.

We ask you:

1) to contact us and give us details for your activities on the day, through facebook, twitter or email: antiracismfascism@yahoo.gr

2) to send us photos and videos of support, holding plackards, stating your solidarity.

3) to send us statements of support that will be read from the platform the day of the demo and concert in Syntagma.

4) to take photos from your solidarity events and send it to us, in order to publicise the size and breadth of our movement.

In case people are travelling to Athens to join us for the day, we would appreciate if you would contact us. We cannot provide facilitation as we are already over-stretched in activity, but there will be an informal meeting of international guests on Friday night, the day before the demo. And we want the international presence to be as organised as possible at the demo itself.

If you have any more ideas about how to help, feel free to contact us in order to coordinate our activities.

The greek antifascist movement is heading for a big confrontation with what seems to be the most dangerous rise of the neonazi far-right in decades. We call on our friends to stand up and be counted on the 19th of January.

In solidarity,

The Organising Committee of the “19 January – Athens Antifascist City”.

Heraklion, Crete: Head-to-head clash between antifascists and neo-Nazis
[IMG]
(some trophies from the fight with the golden dawn thugs)

In the evening of January 15th, 2013 antifascists confronted a Nazi group of the Chrissi Avgi/Golden Dawn party in the city of Heraklion, on Crete.

Approximately 30 fascists were passing out their texts for the second time on one of the city’s avenues. A group of nearly 60 antifascists attacked the Nazis, who wore helmets and carried sticks with the national flag. The Nazis ran away in fear, after a five minute’s clash. Only when fascists retreated did two anti-riot squadrons intervene and try to chase off the counter-protesters (as usual, cops and fascists had coordinated themselves well beforehand). After the crackdown of the police that used tear gas and stun grenades, the dastardly Nazis began to throw stones at the comrades from a distance and urged cops to pursue the antifascists.

More than five Nazis were wounded and needed stitches, while they received concussions and had broken limbs, too. At the same time, three antifascists got injured from the stones and needed stitches. Both Nazis and counter-protesters ended up in the same hospital which was on duty, where two anti-riot squadrons made their presence again, in order to safeguard the Golden Dawn members. While solidarians waited for the injured antifascists to leave the hospital, they slashed the tires of four cars belonging to Nazis outside.

From now on, every attempt of fascists to distribute their material will be accompanied by cops, ambulances, stitches, broken heads, etc. More anti-Nazi actions will follow, even better next time.

Comradely regards to the antifascists in the cities of Agrinio, Patras, Volos and the whole world.

LONG LIVE COMBATIVE ANTIFASCISM!

FASCISTS MURDER AN IMMIGRANT IN ATHENS

A young male from Pakistan aged 27 was murdered yesterday late in the morning at approximately 3.30am, in the area of Petralona in the centre of Athens. The perpetrators were two Greek men aged 28 and 24 years old. The young Pakistani was attacked with a knife and died shortly afterwards. After the murder the two men tried to ride away on their motorbike, but the neighbours and eyewitnesses of the murder kept track of their license plates, they were arrested soon thereafter near Syntagma square by the Police. Anti-racist organizations demonstrated this afternoon in the neighbourhood.

One of the accused assassins was serving in the Fire Department. In the appartments of the two arrested the police found batons, butterfly knives, bullets, brass knuckles, an airgun, and, among other things, dozens of election leaflets for the Golden Dawn neonazi party.

the report is from http://clandestinenglish.wordpress.com/

What is more, though they are now temporarily imprisoned, no charges have been pressed against them for racial incentives, so this won't still go down as a hate crime officially, and there's even been some media that reported it as a traffic dispute !

30,000 Golden Dawn Supporters March in Athens Under Neo-Nazi Banners

Tens of thousands of black-clad neo-Nazis have rallied in Athens in support of Greece's far-right Golden Dawn party, in the movement's biggest show of support since it emerged from obscurity to win 7 percent of the vote in last June's general election.

Billed as a remembrance rally, the event in central Athens on 2 February attracted a crowd of 30,000 to honour three "fallen heroes" of the party. Men dressed in military fatigues, baseball caps and swastikas lit torches and fired flares, chanting anti-immigration slogans.

"We are winning the hearts and minds of the people, because we say it as it is," Golden Dawn spokesman Ilias Kassidiaris told supporters.

"These politicians who have ruled us for decades are crooks. They have betrayed our national interests. They have led us to humiliating defeats," he said, referring to a 1996 dispute with fellow Nato member Turkey, when three Greek air force pilots were killed in a dispute over an Aegean island before the US intervened, forcing both sides to back down.

Kassidiaris added: "This is a day of remembrance. It's a day to remember that Golden Dawn is here to stay. And so long as it does, there will be hope for the country."

But for hardcore Golden Dawn supporters, the retreat was seen as a capitulation, and the party gained traction with the country's young and unemployed in the context of economic disaster at home, and the increasing control wielded by foreign creditors over Greece's failing finances.

"They calls us fascists, thugs and criminals," says Vassilis, a 23-year-old recruit who joined the party because of his disenchantment with the country's political elite.

"We're nationalists. We're patriots. And if these guys who ruled the country for decades had a fibre of the nationalism we're running on, they would have never brought the country to its current predicament."

Hundreds of riot police and security officials were deployed on the march, which took place near the prime minister's office and the Turkish embassy in Athens. Surrounding roads were cordoned off by police, bringing traffic to a halt.

"For a nation that suffered dearly under the Nazis, neo-Nazi gatherings like these should be banned," said Sofia Laniti, a 47-year-old saleswoman.

The Golden Dawn party has begun aggressively targeting teenagers and schoolchildren in a bid to consolidate its recent extraordinary rise in support.

The vigilante far-right movement has begun spreading its anti-immigration message in schools and youth clubs, and through online social media networks, according to recent reports in the international press.

The party has been able to capitalise on the harsh austerity that has been imposed as a condition of Greece maintaining its Eurozone membership. As Greece's economic fortunes have plummeted, so Golden Dawn's fortunes have soared.

Standards of living have diminished for the middle classes, while the nation has seen its sovereignty ceded to foreign creditors.

Campaigning on a platform of expelling immigrants, Golden Dawn took 7 percent of the vote in general elections last June, having polled just 0.2 percent in the previous election in 2009. This gave Golden Dawn 18 seats in parliament.

That marked a breakthrough for the party, which was founded in 1993 but had long been regarded as too extreme. Since then, it has seen its popularity double again, currently polling in third place behind the conservative New Democracy and the main opposition party, the radical leftist Syriza.

The collapse of the ruling conservative-leftist coalition could leave the route open for Golden Dawn to capture second place in a snap election, say pollsters.

The party has attracted votes from across the political spectrum, wiping out the more moderate nationalist LAOS party and winning support from the communist KKE party.

It has also stolen a march on New Democracy, which appeared indecisive on the international bailout keeping Greece afloat, and later lost popularity when it imposed harsh spending cuts instead of relief measures.

Golden Dawn's core supporters are disaffected urban men, but the party is gaining ground among women and the elderly, particularly the unemployed.

Mobilising grassroots support is the party's preferred method of gaining recruits, with Golden Dawn taking a close involvement in neighbourhood initiatives, particularly those in areas with rising crime or high numbers of immigrants.

Gyms, athletic and martial arts clubs are seen as ripe recruiting grounds, while the party now boasts a patriotic supporters' club, known as Galazia Stratia, or the Blue Army.

Its trademark campaigns of violence and intimidation now appear to be spreading to the playground, with nationalist graffiti, slogans and swastika emblems beginning to appear around schools.

"It's the feature of vitality, a need to show they're strong, young and fresh and are creating something new - be it a new party, a new country," said Vassiliki Georgiadou, a professor at Panteion University and an expert in far-right nationalism, who has studied Golden Dawn for years.

"They discard the label of Nazism and instead play up the nationalist card. They use ancient Greek history as a camouflage to hide their true identity: that they're fans of Hitler, anti-Semitism."

Over 50 teachers, parents and teenage students from schools in Athens have backed up his claims, telling The Independent that the party's increasingly fashionable image meant it was gaining a fan-base among young people.

One youthful supporter, Stavros, 16, admitted to the paper that he had thrown rocks and fruit at the homes of Pakistani immigrants.

"I did this to get them to respect our country because I love Greece so much," he said. "Golden Dawn kids are not killers but people who are worried that we won't be able to find jobs because of all those illegal immigrants."

Another young supporter, Evdoxia, 16, told the paper: "Golden Dawn is not a descendant of Nazism. Whoever thinks it is, doesn't know what the party's really about.

"Golden Dawn is trying to offer solutions amid difficult times. Contrary to other parties, they actually do what they say they will."

Ernesto, a youth of Albanian origin, described how his classmate Kostas fell in with the shaven-headed, black-vested youths who support Golden Dawn.

"Kostas felt he was different by hanging out with them. They were the mean, cool guys that everyone was afraid of. They hated immigrants and even taught their dogs to growl at Africans. It was crazy."

The party denies it advocates Nazi-inspired racial violence, but several of its MPs recently participated in a co-ordinated attack on immigrant market vendors, whose stalls were smashed up in Athens.

The daughter of the party's leader was arrested over a racist attack last June, while another Golden Dawn MP Ilias Kasidiaris achieved notoriety when he was filmed slapping Liana Kanelli, a communist MP, across the face.

Ioannis Vouldis, the Golden Dawn MP who heads the party's youth branch, refused to comment directly to the media. "At present, there is a decision not to talk to the press," he said.

Fascist attacks on self-organised spaces repulsed

Two self-organised spaces were successfully defended when they were attacked by fascist and police forces over the weekend.

Supporters of the fascist Golden Dawn attacked self-organized spaces in the Athens' neighbourhood of Zografou on Saturday night. The attack, which was beaten back, came as supporters of Golden Dawn and nationalists marched nearby.

The attackers broke off from a Golden Dawn and nationalist demonstration in Athens. The march was on the anniversary of the Imia incident, a clash in the 1990's between Greece and Turkey over some deserted rocks in the Aegean which almost led to war. The media reports that around 5,000 fascists and nationalists from all over Greece took part in the march, though the same reports fail to mention the attack in Zografou.

As the protest ended a number of motorcyclists who accompanied the march broke off and headed to Villa Zografou and Berntes, two self-organised spaces in Zografou. The fascists attacked the buildings but in both cases were repulsed by people in the area. Some of the fascists needed hospital treatment and according to some reports one of those injured was taken to hospital 401 which is only for members of the police and armed forces. Following the attack the Villa was surrounded by heavy police forces as hundreds of people rushed to defend the spaces. The police forces eventually withdrew in the early hours.

Not far from the neighbourhood of Zografou the Golden Dawn have recently opened a new office, funnily enough it's in the same area as the police headquarters of the Athens' region. So places such as Villa Zografou are of great importance in resisting the expanding Golden Dawn presence in central Athens. Whilst the fact that the far-right was able to hold a march with thousands of supporters is worrying the night was not a great show of strength. In terms of sheer numbers 5,000 is only half of the approximately 10,000 who came out for a recent demonstration in support of the squats of Athens. What's more the attacks on the social centres show that the far-right is being confronted by organised and determined anti-fascists who continue to grow in strength.

The need for an increasing and ever more determined anti-fascist presence was shown by other recent events. A 37 year-old father of two from Senegal, Cheikh (Babakar) Ndiaye died in Athens after police chased him onto the train tracks at Thissio station on Friday night. Policemen chased Cheikh as part of an operation to remove migrant street sellers in the area. Such harassment of migrants on the streets of Athens' tourist centre has long been an every day occurrence. Friends of Cheikh Ndiaye who gathered at the scene were beaten back by riot police units. This latest death comes two weeks after supporters of the Golden Dawn murdered Shehzad Luqman a 27 year-old man from Pakistan, also in Athens.

Greece’s neo-fascists are on the rise... and now they’re going into schools: How Golden Dawn is nurturing the next generation

In a special investigation, Nathalie Savaricas reveals the tactics used to recruit children to its far-right political beliefs

SATURDAY 02 FEBRUARY 2013

On a recent Thursday night, seven teenage boys in the central Greek city of Larissa decided to have what they described as “fun”. Armed with rocks and wooden batons, the group of 15-year-olds attacked the shop of a Pakistani resident. His son was treated for head injuries.

Attacks by children are rare, but there are fears that they are on the rise as a harsh anti-immigrant rhetoric with undercurrents of violence takes root in the malleable minds of patriotic youths as they watch their country's sovereignty being eroded by foreign creditors.

The potential to tap into this dissatisfaction and win over Greece's future voters has not been lost on the controversial Golden Dawn party: an investigation by The Independent found the neo-fascist party gaining ground among the country's youth, aggressively spreading their anti-immigrant, far-right message through social media, the internet, and youth clubs.

The vigilante, truculent and anti-establishment features of Golden Dawn offer a seductive alternative to the radical left or anarchist movements that have traditionally appealed to Greece's teenagers. Over 50 teachers, parents and teenage students from schools across Athens interviewed by The Independent agree that the party is slowly becoming fashionable, when three years ago it was barely known.

"It's the feature of vitality: a need to show they're strong, young and fresh and are creating something new: be it a new party, a new country," explains Vassiliki Georgiadou, professor at Panteion University and an expert of far-Right wing radicalism who has studied Golden Dawn for years. "They discard the label of Nazism and instead play up the nationalist card. They use ancient Greek history as a camouflage to hide their true identity: that they're fans of Hitler, anti-Semitism."

Sixteen-year old Stavros doesn't see his parents often as they work hard to put food on the table. His mother is a fervent supporter of the left wing Syriza party, but Stavros was drawn to the nationalist rhetoric of Golden Dawn. He admits that he has in the past thrown rocks and fruit at the homes of Pakistani residents.

"I did this to get them to respect our country because I love Greece so much," he boasts. "Golden Dawn kids are not killers but people who are worried that we won't be able to find jobs because of all those illegal immigrants."

Evdoxia, also 16, wants to be a lawyer. She wears pink glasses and her manicured little finger sports a golden ring with a sparkly heart. Her nails and clothes are black – the favourite colour of many adolescents, but also of her favourite political party. "Golden Dawn is not a descendent of Nazism," Evdoxia insists, playing with the cherry shaped pendant dangling from her neck. "Whoever thinks it is, doesn't know what the party's really about."

She is typical of the new Golden Dawn supporter. The punishing austerity programme that has gripped Greece as it struggles to cling to its eurozone membership has radically eroded her middle class quality of life. The weekly supermarket shopping became monthly. Birthday and Christmas gifts vanished. Evdoxia is extremely worried about her future.

"Golden Dawn is trying to offer solutions amid difficult times and contrary to other parties, they actually do what they say they will," she eloquently explains. The Zoro-style saviour tactics of this party is what also appealed to Evdoxia, who says her cousin was attacked and robbed by an African immigrant.

She discovered Golden Dawn on the internet – the far-right movement actively uses social media to expand their presence. A few months ago, Facebook removed the profile pages of Golden Dawn MPs and other related pages for breaching the site's terms on racism and promoting violence, but there are plenty of other websites hosting their views.

The party is reaping the fruit of its tireless campaigning. Grassroots mobilisation is its main recruitment technique, and the party is actively involved in neighbourhood initiatives, especially in areas that saw a rise of crime and strong influx of migrants. One teen told of how party members sometimes hand out mobile phone numbers to youths, claiming they are to help protect them from crime when they return late from school.

Gyms, athletic and martial arts clubs are easy ground to recruit youngsters and there is even a patriotic supporters club, Galazia Stratia (Blue Army), which draws its membership from the youth. Music is also influential in attracting young followers. Two of Golden Dawn's MPs are musicians. One of them, Artemis Matthaiopoulos, was the bass player of white power rock band Pogrom which sang the praises of Hitler's Auschwitz death camp. Another nationalist song of theirs is entitled "Speak Greek Or Die."

The problem for teachers and other officials is how to tackle the rise of the far-right. A mainstream political party trying to recruit new members is not illegal, and Golden Dawn is no longer a fringe movement. After emerging from obscurity to win 7 per cent of the vote at last year's elections, the party has seen its popularity nearly double. If elections were to take place soon, polls predict the party would likely come into third place.

While Ioannis Vouldis, the Golden Dawn MP who heads the party's youth branch, agreed to receive The Independent at their offices, he refused to answer any questions about its activities, saying only that: "At present there is a decision not to talk to the press."

Golden Dawn denies ties to any racist violence, although immigrant organisations strongly contest this, while analysts say their rhetoric has prompted many of followers to act on slogans like "clean up Greece of the stench" – in reference to illegal immigrants. A few months ago, Golden Dawn MPs smashed the stalls of immigrant vendors who failed to provide the necessary permits for selling goods at street markets. The daughter of the party's leader was also detained over a racist attack last June.

These culture clashes appear to be spreading into the playground. Graffiti of Greek flags, nationalist slogans, and signs that bear a resemblance to swastikas have started appearing around schools. Nikiforos, 12, blames Golden Dawn for the recent rise of violence between his Greek and foreign schoolmates. "We've turned into Age of Empires," he shyly jokes, making reference to the popular computer war game where kingdoms clash in an effort to expand their civilisation.

Ernesto, 17, is an Albanian who grew up with his Greek friend Kostas in central Athens. They shared their food, discussed girls and played football. But a few years ago, Kostas started spending his time with a group of black-clad youths with shaved heads who claimed to support Golden Dawn.

"Kostas felt he was different by hanging out with them: they were the mean and cool guys that everyone was afraid of," he recalls. "They hated immigrants and even taught their dogs to growl at Africans – it was crazy".

The widespread anger that Greeks have experienced since the beginning of the economic crisis has been channelled to children and is shaping their psyche, experts say. Child psychologist Amalia Louizou explains that in such an environment, children are the easiest recipients of extremist messages.

About 50 teachers set up the Anti-Fascist Front of Education to deal with the rise of right-wing extremism, but with deep cuts to the education budget, there are few resources to help them win the fierce battle for the minds of youths. Concepts like Nazism, fascism and prejudice need to be endowed with significance to youths who can't relate to them, experts say.

"Kids need to start loving people who are different in colour and religion and this can only really happen from schools," argues Mr Georgiadou from Panteion University. "They're being taught about ancient Greece instead of what is a democracy and the benefits of living in it instead of a dictatorship."

Meanwhile, at a Golden Dawn youth festival at the foot of Mt Ymittos in Athens, a few months ago, the party's leader thundered to thousands of supporters: "They've called us thugs, fascists, racists but we answered: we are the future, you are the past."

"We are the Greece that is coming."

Golden Dawn: Exploiting austerity

Until recently, Golden Dawn was a fringe party – thought of by most Greeks as too extreme. But as the economy has worsened, the party's fortunes have improved.

Founded in 1993, the party's breakthrough came in the 2012 elections – marked by deep economic recession and budget cuts. Golden Dawn took around seven per cent, vowing to expel both legal and illegal immigrants. In the previous election it polled just 0.2 per cent.

Golden Dawn denies that it is a neo-Nazi party, preferring to call itself nationalist. But its members are accused of acts of violence against immigrants and ethnic minorities. The party's flag is an ancient Greek symbol similar to the swastika and its leader, Nikolaos Mihaloliakos, gave a Nazi salute at an Athens city council meeting in 2011.

The party made headlines last year when Ilias Kasidiaris, a high-profile member, slapped a female MP on live television.

Far-right Golden Dawn launches child indoctrination courses

FEB 27 2013

Greece’s far-right Golden Dawn party has started courses on what it calls “national awakening” for children from six to 10 years old.

About 20 children attended the first such meeting – with their parents. The party said it was held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at its offices in Artemis Attica.

The children watched “educational videos” and participated in a panel discussion on “the birth of the ancient world, the Olympian gods and the Christian faith” according to Golden Dawn’s website.

The site added that the initiative was the first of many to be organised “in an effort to regenerate the Greek spirit”.

On January 31, the website posted a text by George Georgalas, first published in 1967, about the value and importance of childhood indoctrination.

In the text, the author indicated that children between six and 10 years old are the most “appropriate” for that in order to “create the trends, tendencies, ideals through fiction.”
