alternative social network ran by hackers???

I bring this up because i for one refuse to use the usual sites for social networking
i have in the past as a tool but soon lost interest for various political and personal
reasons.
this site is volunteer run and they call their developers hackers but im unsure if its a factual claim

Maybe by "hacker" they mean the old-school definition, not the mass media bullshit definition. A hacker used to be someone that was personally interested in technology and would modify and play with it, use things in ways they weren't intended to be used, and may sometimes break the law... sort of your classic nerd. The media tried to redefine "hacker" to mean someone who just broke into computer systems to cause criminal damage.

But yeah, I was looking at this. They had a lot of issues when it initially released, security problems mostly, but it looks like there's been a lot of work done to it.
