This song has always summed up that question for me:
the science of myth by screeching weasel
If you've ever question beliefs that you hold you're not alone But you oughtta realize that every myth is a metaphor in the case of Christianity and Judaism there exist the belief that spiritual matters are enslaved to history The Buddhists believe that the functional aspects override the myth while other religions use the literal core to build foundations with See half the world sees the myth as fact while it's seen as a lie by the other half and the simple truth is that it's none of that and somehow no matter what the world keeps turning Somehow we get by without ever learning somehow no matter what the world keeps turning Science and religion are not mutually exclusive In fact for better understanding we take the facts of science and apply them And if both factors keep evolving then we continue getting information but closing off possibilities makes it hard to see the bigger picture Consider the case of the women whose faith helped her make it through when she was raped and cut up left for dead in a trunk her beliefs held true It doesn't matter if it's real or not cause some things are better left without a doubt and if it works then it gets the job done Somehow no matter what the world keeps turning
I'm too pissed to be a folksinger I'm not a punk but that's where I'm coming from I'm not too into music but I got so much of it inside I'm not a drunk aggressive idiot And I used to believe in punk I thought it might offer something new but punk ripped me off cheated me out of something close to me I'm trying to move along but some roots reach pretty far down I'm interested in politics and action In trying to create something that's not I feel like I'm in the middle of everything There is no niche for me And I believe in anarchy in trying to live autonomously I try not to walk my talk but to talk my walk - $ETH!

hot damn...i always like screeching weasel's stuff....so true. religion and sciene are beliefs and, like all beliefs, they don't mean shit unless they're yours. the line is crossed when people start forcing beliefs onto each other.
haha side note/ off topic, my old high school civics teacher gave me a bunch of his old screeching weasel 7"s...can't remember off the top of my head which album it was but instead of side A or B it had side anus and side blow job...still can't believe i got that record from a school teacher lol.

'God' guards bank with no locksA bank chain in India has taken the extraordinary step of opening a branch relying totally on divine intervention for protection.
The United Commercial Bank in Mumbai has opened the country’s first 'lockless bank' in the village of Shani Shinganapur near Maharashtral, The Times of India reports.
The local villagers places great faith in their local deity, Lord Shani, with more than 100,000 people visiting a shrine devoted to him each weekend.
Locals claim that since taking on Lord Shani as their deity several years ago, their village has remained crime free.
"We took note of the general belief and faith of the people. Ever since the most revered temple came into existence several years ago, the village has not witnessed a single crime”, a senior bank official claims.
With this absolute faith foremost in their mind, local officials chose to construct the bank with no security measures.
It took some work to convince the bank to build a lockless branch, but upon studying the local area, officials were reportedly comfortable with the move.
"All houses here have no doors. We are following a more or less similar practice. Our branch has doors, but they will never be locked", a local legislator told the Times.
"It is certainly taking a risk, but in view of the peoples belief the bank has set up the branch." The bank is expected to put some security measures in place for locked boxes and important documents.
"Never Work"

The force at which things have attraction to one another and in the example of our earth, things fall down when you drop them, that force itself is the law of gravitation. Gravity has another part, the theory aspect. The actual *cause* of that force, the force which is responsible for gravitation, is ONLY a theory. Now here is evolution. Microevolution and macroevolution are not distinguishable things to the vast, vast majority of the scientific community. Microevolution is fact. It should realistically be a law, if it is not already associated with scientific law. The theory of evolution is a scientific theory, not just a wild "pulled out of a bunch of wealthy creative Romans asses" theory, like a theistic religious approach would be. However, evolution being fact does not necessarily totally discredit any religion, theistic or Hindu or generic pagan, anything. It does for sure completely discredit certain sections of religious "scripture", as if saying that word, "scripture", has any more significance other than making something sound more valid, when in fact the majority of those religious texts are merely the psychotic ramblings of wealthy people living around the Mediterranean 1500-1400 years ago. Not only that but they have lost much significance to many people who can actually read recently, considering the age of the texts and the fact that life today compared to 2000+ years ago is like night and day. This is a given too. And some ideas *suggested* from some religious texts, but not always necessarily implied, may be extremely harmful to the fair well being of individuals today. Therefore I think it is horse shit. The reason why Jesus Christ and Allah and the Bible and such are so popular nowadays is not because of any religious text anyway. If that were true literacy rates for the worlds population would have needed to be much, much, much higher than they were for the vast majority of our history since about 2k years ago. This is especially true for much of Europe under the "holy Roman empire" and its laws regarding bible possession. No, the reason why theism in specific is so popular nowadays is because governments and parents push it, it is utilized as a tool much in the same fashion I believe, as a soldier, or squad of soldiers is used as a murder weapon by the government. False morality, is the simplest way for me to put why I dislike theism. It projects constant false morality in the face of what is good and just and actually moral to todays standards, which is what we call being REALISTIC. Note that I said theism in specific, not religion entirely. Theism being Christianity and Islam mainly, but Judaism somewhat as well, as in the reverse-apologetics of zionism. Also, people are morons for thinking that atheists/agnostics = fascist/racist. People are also stupid for thinking that atheism=lack of morals. That makes no sense whatsoever if you just *think*, FFS. Atheism means a lack of something, not of morals that's for sure. In fact I imagine the beliefs in the big poof would be less moral in most ways because they/you can wildly and randomly explain horrible and inhumane things by making up excuses. How is not agreeing with the theistic belief systems a lack of morality or goodness? I don't understand, please explain to me further then how atheism = lack of morality, when in reality it is merely a lack of belief in a judgemental, childish, egocentric prison-warden god.
