    Heyya fellow Australians,

I was wondering if you guys could tell me some good places for punk gigs in Melbourne. I have only been to the Arthouse and the Cherry bar but that is about it. Unfortunately none of my friends are into punk like I am so they have no idea where to go and I am failing at searching on the web. WAs hoping some of you guys would be kind enough to tell me some awesome places for gigs.

Thanks in advance and I hope to see you at some gigs =)

The Tote is re-opening soon...I am not sure when but it will be opening the doors again this year. The Arthouse is due to close at the end of the year after 19 years of awesomeness and the landlord has gotten greedier for more money. So we will lose that venue... :(

In the meantime there is a Melbourne Punk page been made on myspace which is in it's embrionic stages but the link is: http://www.myspace.com/melbournepunk

In regards to non-punk specific stuff check out Loophole Community Centre (670 High Street, Northcote). There is a library there with tea and coffee, a space out the back and a courtyard of sorts. Barriacade Books are located there as well. (http://loopholecommunitycentre.org/)

Melbourne Anarchist Resource Centre is also open from 12pm-3pm on Sundays and that is located at 62 St Georges Road, Northcote.

Brunswick and Coburg are still decent art areas although they seem to be moving out of the area as the real-estate agents fuck the suburb till it bleeds.

St Kilda is pretty much fucked these days and has sorta lost it's edge.

sure thing, PM me or something.

Re venues in Melbourne, its more of the case of finding out where gigs are on rather than knowing the cool venues. A lotta places put good shows on, and a lotta the places already mentioned put on shit shows too.

I'm personally more of an arthouse wanker, liking late 80's emo, skramz, post-rock, other wanky genres, more than i am up da punx, so to speak, but anywayz...

Bar Open in Brunswick St is fucking rad, they put on lotsa free shows, generally really fucked up experimental stuff too.
the Old Bar round the corner in Johnston St puts on good shows too.
Pony (lil collins st) has good shows sometimes, plus it has 2am free shows on friday and Saturday, and is open till 7am.

As far as DIY/all age spaces goes
    Loophole is rad
Irenes warehouse in Pitt st, East Brunswick rules
Black Oak is a newy in Coburg somewhere
Catfood press on lygon st, east brunswick puts on shows sometimes too.
El joyero is a rad cafe in High St, Thornbury that puts on sunday arvo shows a bit too

I'd personally suggest you find some good resources to find out where the fuck shows are on at (tons are at ppl's houses it seems atm)
the shows forum here is good...

the best option is to just go into missing link and pick up flyers

btw, if yr in town May 22, come to this...
    if u got farcebook- http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=114700448566739#!/event.php?eid=115416621830468

If not, Ascot Vale, addy TBC
    Leprosy- 82 uk hardcore styling
    Satori- Stoner Doom
Bloody Hammer- Yeap's (pisschrist, et al) new band, fantastic oi!attack
Last measure- a bunch of kids playing a distinct and creative brand of hardcore
Occult Blood- improvised grindcore, basically noise with a blastbeat

    should be fun!
