The two-and-a-half month ordeal received brief national attention when the Mohawk warriors of Kahnawake, in support of their brothers from nearby Kanehsatake, temporarily held the busy Mercier Bridge leading to Montreal, in an effort to bring world attention to the situation. Starting with plans to construct a luxury housing development and expand a private golf course into the Pines, part of Mohawk Nation's land, tensions rose quickly and tempers flared as Mohawks were once again fighting for their sovereignty. After a police officer was killed in a raid to expel the Mohawks from the Pines, the situation spiraled out of control. In scene after startling scene the drama escalates as the Quebec police are replaced by units from the Canadian army. With few exceptions journalists covering the crisis either evacuated or were forcibly removed. Alanis Obomsawin spent the final weeks of the standoff without a crew, shooting on video and using the slow speed on her sound recorder to stretch out her limited supply of audio tape. Obomsawin's detailed portrayal of the Mohawk community places the Oka crisis within the larger context of Mohawk land rights dating back to 1535 when France claimed the site of present-day Montreal which had been the Mohawk village of Hochelaga. Her evocative dimension of the conflict, exploring the fierce conviction of the Mohawks and the communal spirit that enabled them to stand firm. ya i was watchign this liek last week i think. its a great documentary. there are parts that they show the mohawk warriors of kahnawake blockade in chateauguay. it tripped me out because thats right where i live and its weird to see it so old and there being fat ass riots and peopel throwing moltoves at cops and shit liek that. i am happy they stood up for them selfs. after all we took tons of their land. the least the white man could do is not build a fuckign golf course on a old buril ground. i would have supported them if it were happenign now. i remeber my dad tellign me about the blockade ad how there were a bunch of tanks on the island of montreal pointed into kahnawake over the st lawrance. it was some almost dark times.
yeah man don't fuck with the mohawks they don't give up so easily haha... i have another cool documentary about the crisis but it's in french... it talks more about the climate before the confrontation... it's funny how all peoples from kanehsatake warned the cops to not go fuck with the indians, but they still went inside the territory... there was not only molotov cocktails, also ak-47 and a lot of automatic guns and worst part of all is that back in the time my uncle was the commander of the special intervention unit of the police... he's the one who was shot on the bridge near the indian territory ....
ur uncle was the only person to die. that sucks. that shoot out was chaotic and crazy im surprised more werent killed. for the moltoves i was talking about the white population of chateauguay. they were pissed burning straw native doll things on sticks and shit. so riot cops came and they moltoved them. i doubt they were shooting the cops with aks. but ya the natives had a bunch of gun and aks. i have alot of native friends and have been to their house. i have seen cratyes filled with guns and ammo. alot of guns get run through kahnawake by gangs bringing them up from the states or into the states depending what they are,. most true sentance i have heard in a while. dont fuck with the natives
no he's not the one who died, he just took a lost shot or something like that and yes, the mohawks had AK47 they confirm it in the documentary i am talking about (you can see it here : http://www.quebecunderground.net/message.php?t=3539)
yes im not talking about the mohawks haveing the aks though i was talking about the white people living in chateauguay. i know the natives have them if u watch the video you see a native with a gun in almost every shot. its crazy how aks are so abundunt and everywhere...they are wepon of choice for so many milita groups and people...gotta get the best when it comes down to defending you house haha
Yeah it's because Ak-47 is the equivalent of the american M16 and it's so much more cheaper... I seen a documentary about the traffic of weapons and they say that used ak-47 sells for only a couple of hundreds dollars, it's crazy... It's a fucking deadly weapon, cheap, and very reliable since it always work even after being drowned in water... However in canada weapons are very controlled, especially automatic weapons... it's surprising to see that they managed to get weapons but oh well.. for the natives it's not really surprising...
ya thats why they run the guns through the reserve. the only police that can fuck with them are federal marshell guys. normal cops have nothing. thats why people run into the reserve when being chased by cops. poor kid died not long ago becausde some guy tried driving into the reserve to get away from a cop becasue he was drunk. hit a kid. but thats a differnt story... yaa the ak is suuper good i watched peopel test the. you can dunk them in water. sand. mud even ran it over with a tank. still shot with out a problem.
ya but they are only illigal becase they dont pay taxes on them. so the goverment gets no money from them. and around here isent there somthign making it so that all tobbaco prodution has to be regulated and pretty much owned by a federal program somthing like that
